Lá Fhéile Pádraig

Illustration, Motion graphics, Light art

March 2025

Macao

This design series continues its exploration of festive communication through a Saint Patrick's Day card design. The initiative aims to celebrate one of March's biggest cultural festivals through a more playful and interactive approach than previous designs—putting the "craft" in arts and crafts this time around.

The project captures the essence of Saint Patrick's Day and Irish culture through the tales of Saint Patrick, the Irish language, and elements from church stained-glass windows. It is expressed primarily through animation, with a crafted physical version reflecting its digital counterpart.

This project incorporates elements from the tale of Saint Patrick banishing snakes from Ireland, as seen abstractly in the border of the artwork. Other traditional festival elements appear in the design, such as shamrock, a pot of gold, Saint Patrick himself, a pint of Guinness, and sea waves where mythical seals selkies from Irish folklore reside.

Using the same paper stock as previous cards maintains series consistency, while introducing a new crafting technique: paper cutouts backed with colour-printed acetate to recreate a stained-glass window effect. Digitally, the animation is created using Adobe After Effect.
